Crédit Agricole and Balsamic Agreement

The agreement between Crédit Agricole Italia and the Balsamic Vinegar Protection Consortium is recent. One of the main objectives is the development of access to credit for companies belonging to the Balsamic Vinegar Protection Consortium.

It consolidates the new collaboration. Born between the two entities, with the aim of allowing the companies associated with the consortium to use the so-called revolving pledge. The agreement was signed by the president of the Protection Consortium, Mariangela Grosoli, and by the Parma-Emilia east regional director of Crédit Agricole Italia, Maurizio Crepaldi.

What is the revolving pledge?

According to the Civil Code. The pledge constitutes the delivery to the creditor of the thing (or document). It confers the exclusive availability of the thing itself. The debtor, with the pledge, loses possession of the thing given as security while the creditor can dispose of it in the event of default by the debtor. The Revolving Pledge is a type of pledge that allows the debtor, upon notification to the creditor, to replace the assets originally given as a guarantee, with others of equal value.

Crédit Agricole and Balsamic Agreement

How it works for vinegar producers

In the case of the agreement between Crédit Agricole Italia and the Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar, the goal is to achieve a consolidation. This is not only of the production fabric of the Black Gold of Modena but also of the local fabric. In other words, the agreement aims at the development and consolidation of commercial relationships with the supported companies.

From now on, the Bank will be able to initiate, with the necessary guarantees, credit lines to generate liquidity. Thanks to the possibility of pledging stocks with Balsamic Vinegar Producers. In other words, the Members of the Balsamic Vinegar Protection Consortium can make use of financing products and services at advantageous condition. This is because of the possibility of providing guarantees to the Bank, in the form of a revolving pledge.

Maurizio Crepaldi stated: “We believe that the revolving pledge favours better financial management. Represents a particularly suitable solution for those who produce foods that complete their production cycle through ageing or maturing processes. This agreement stimulates the demand for credit to meet the needs of producers. Furthermore, it represents an important moment in the relationship between the bank, the companies and the territory. It testifies to a concrete dialogue and the ability to identify shared solutions for real needs”

Land of Balsamic: goal 22 stores and Formigine comes first

It’s official… Formigine di Modena is a land of Balsamic Vinegar. We find it written on the sign at the entrance to the city! The goal is to identify with this sign the 22 municipalities of the province that host a Municipal Acetaia. However, Formigine arrived first!

Starting on the 11th of February, Formigine di Modena is Land of Balsamic. With just over 35,000 citizens, the Municipality has crossed the finish line. It is the first in the province of Modena to have obtained the sign that warns passers-by that it is entering into the “Land of Balsamic Vinegar”.

The Mayor of Formigine says: “There is a great culture of Balsamic in our territory. Every year there are many people from Formigine who participate and are awarded in the Palio di San Giovanni. We thank Consortia for the launch of this project. We hope will become a driving force for the whole province of Modena in the months of the restart after the pandemic ”.

The initiative

The Consortia of Balsamic Traditional of Spilamberto (Modena) launched the initiative of the sign. The aim is to expand the “Land of Balsamic Vinegar” to the 22 Municipalities in the province of Modena that host their own Municipal Acetaia. In this regard, the Grand Master Fini affirms: “Finally we are beginning to understand the cultural value of this treasure. It has been in our hands for centuries!”. In fact, putting up such a number of signs on the doors of the municipalities would be a great goal for Balsamic Vinegar!

The Acetaia di Formigine

Kept in Villa Benvenuti. The Formigine Municipal Acetaia was born about 50 years ago. The master Giorgio Ferrari has directed it since 1994. The Acetaia is named after “Francesco Aggazzotti”, the first mayor of Formigine.

It is curious to mention this fact. The product specification for the protected designation of origin of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar was obtained from one of his letters. This is dated 1862.  (We also talked about it here).

Two batteries make up the Acetaia di Formigine. Five barrels each, plus a mother barrel and is now at a crucial point: the last formal step is missing to obtain eligibility for the P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin).

Of the 22 municipal vinegar factories in the province of Modena, 14 have already obtained this recognition. Together with Formigine, in addition, Castelvetro, Camposanto and the Acetaia Ducale of Modena (at the Academy) will soon obtain it.

The Grand Master Fini says: “I have to thank the administration of Formigine and those of all the other Municipalities. Through the Municipal Acetaie they have been able to give voice and substance to our tradition. They projecting it into the future where the younger generations will be able to touch it with their hands and feel between the scents and suggestions of barrels all the modenness of a unique product in the world”.

In conclusion, Modenesi, we can only be proud to be part of the “Land of Balsamic Vinegar”.

Greetings from Modena!

Monari Federzoni acquires Fattorie Giacobazzi. They are historical producers and giants of the market who create one of the largest production companies in the Balsamic sector.

Monari Federzoni Spa is a co-leader of the production of vinegar market. Recently, it has acquired Fattorie Giacobazzi, a company based in Nonantola and owned by Granarolo Spa. It was founded in 1988 by Giacobazzi family. It has been a great producer of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI.

Thanks to this acquisition, a new production pole was born.
The numbers confirm it: 32 million Euros of total turnover, 84 employees, 18 million bottles corresponding to 11% of the total sales of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI exported to 55 countries. They also produce Apple Vinegar, Wine Vinegar, Pear Vinegar, Balsamic Condiments and the Vinegardrink range (a new drink with Balsamic Vinegar of Modena).
They have 5500 barrels of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.
We are talking about 25% of world sales of the aged product, big numbers for big giants.

Monari Federzoni acquires Fattorie Giacobazzi

Sabrina Federzoni, CEO and President of Monari Federzoni Spa, said that the two companies are synergistic with each from the point of view of production, sales channel and presence in various markets.

She also said that the acquisition underlines the company’s desire to enhance the Modenese territory thanks to a symbolic product: the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. This product has dominated the main business of her family from more than a hundred years.

The two companies are two concrete and well-known entities that will maintain their respective specificities and skills, creating a system of excellence will allow the company to continue sharing the culture of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena and to grow in Italy and the world.

Giampiero Calzolari, President of the Granarolo Group, has spent words of satisfaction for this acquisition that allows maintaining the continuity of Italian ownership with a company focused on Balsamic Vinegar of Modena production.

We remind you of an important fact: in 2017 the Associated British Foods owner of Twinings brand acquired the Acetum market leader company bringing the ownership of the historic Modenese company to England.

Balsamic Vinegar PGI pesticides, a new that you don’t want to read and that doesn’t help the Modena Balsamic market.

A recent survey, carried out by the Swiss magazine Ktipp, have compared fourteen PGI branded products sold in supermarkets or discount stores. The chemical examination’s results are incredible.

Balsamic Vinegar PGI pesticides

Researchers haven’t found any traces of added sugars, adulterants and above all ochratoxin or methylimidazole. Those are problematic sugdxnhbstances previously identified in some products in the analyzes carried out in 2015.

The product quality has improved, but the analysis has also highlighted the presence of pesticides in the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI.
Before the recent analysis, in 2015, researchers found Iprodione (an element that protects grapes from mould and parasites).
The problem is that Iprodione can also cause cancer. From 2108 the element is banned.

The results are not good because they have found the presence of pesticides in a lot of products.
The analysis has also highlighted that high price and quality do not always mean that the product is excellent. For example, the Globus Delicatezza Balsamic Vinegar PGI contained a mix of nine different pesticides.

Unfortunately, expensive bottles of vinegar and well-known brands such as Mazzetti L’Originale and Giuseppe Giusti also contained three different pesticides in minimal quantities.

We have got good news regarding the following products in which they didn’t find any trace of pesticides:
Ponti Balsamic Vinegar, Antica Modena Balsamic Vinegar, Despar Balsamic Vinegar, Garibaldi Balsamic Vinegar, Lidl Acetino, BIO Migros Balsamic Vinegar and Bio Naturaplan Coop Vinegar.

These are the test results:

Production Regulations of Balsamic Vinegar

We remind you that the Production Regulations of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI born in 2009 provides that:

  • “Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI is the product obtained (with particular and traditional technology) from grape musts. Musts are from grapes from the following vines: Lambruschi, Sangiovese, Trebbiani, Albana, Ancellotta, Fortana, Montuni, partially fermented and/or cooked and/or concentrated, with the addition of an aliquot of vinegar aged at least 10 years, to give the product its typical organoleptic characteristics, and with the addition of vinegar obtained by acetification of wine only to the extent by at least 10%. “
  • “The steps that must necessarily take place in the geographical area of origin are the assembly of raw materials, processing, refining and/or ageing in wooden containers.”
(Grapes can have any geographical origin).
  • “The percentage of cooked and/or concentrated grape must have not to be less than 20% of the mass to be processed.”

Did you know that the Production Regulations of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO allow the use of grapes coming exclusively from the Province of Modena?

Balsamic: “Made Green In Italy” Brand.
The world is growing. Population is increasing, urban areas are expanding and the search for forms of sustainability is developing. Nowadays, the word Green Economy is known by everyone and among almost every sector (from technology to transport, from housing to new eco-sustainable products).

The food sector is not an exception. Food choices that we make, not only influence our diet but they also have a significant environmental impact: what we eat, or what we don’t eat, correspond to a certain food waste, to waste of resources and to the ecological capacity of each nation (which is the total production capacity of a specific product area).

“Made Green In Italy” Brand

Last 13th of June 2018, The Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea issued the decree number 56/2018. It provides for the operating methods of the scheme called “Made Green in Italy”. The goal is to promote products with high environmental qualification.

The Ministry grants the use of the “Made Green In Italy” logo to all products that have those qualifications (the products can also be services or goods).

The implementation of the scheme involves two phases:

  • First phase: development of Product Category Rules (RCP)
RCP refers to documents containing methodological indications that outline the requirements necessary for conducting studies relating to the environmental footprint for a specific product category.
The RCP can be proposed by public or private subjects, according to specific criteria.
  • Second phase: joining the “Made Green in Italy” scheme
The membership application can be made if:
    – the RCP of the product category is valid
    – the product for which membership is requested can be classified as “Made in Italy”.

Balsamic: “Made Green In Italy” Brand

Thanks to the fundings coming from the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Sea, the Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI is already working on the definition of Product Category Rules (RCP).

Balsamic: "Made Green In Italy" Brand For our Balsamic Vinegar, this means taking the first step towards the “Made Green in Italy” Brand.

The national “Made Green in Italy scheme aims to promote sustainable production and consumption models.
It is based on the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) methodology and contributes to implementing the indications from the European Commission which recently developed the “Farm to Fork” project.
This project aims at guiding the transitions towards a sustainable food system over the next decade.

As lovers of Balsamic, we really hope that it can become part of this special project.

Greetings from Modena.

A new positive development has been reached with the commercial agreement between Europe and China. This commercial agreement with China guarantees the protection of Balsamic Vinegar on the Chinese market.

In recent days, a new agreement has been stipulated between Brussels and Beijing which provides for the mutual recognition and protection of 100 PGI and PDO branded food products.

26 food excellence including Balsamic Vinegar of Modena will be protected in the People’s Republic of China. A product exported to 120 countries in the world and one of the main ambassadors of Made in Italy.

The agreement is now being examined by the European Parliament and could enter into force by the end of 2020.

Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena

The result obtained with China is not the only one during the last months.

The bilateral pact previously signed with Vietnam will be active in a few days.

At the same time, the work to complete the texts of the agreements with Mexico and Korea continue.

These results are important for the protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. They constitute the main instrument to protect and unequivocally globally recognize our food excellence.

Great satisfaction was expressed by the top management of the Balsamic Vinegar Protection Consortium of Modena. Director Federico Desimoni reaffirmed the importance of the agreement and the will of the Consortium in promoting and continuing the product protection policy towards international institutions.

We remind you that 50% of the production is exported to non-European countries. Guarantee the protection of Balsamic means not only helping the manufacturing companies but also all the staff involved.

We believe that the efforts made have given good results. Our “black gold” has always been included in the lists of Italian PGI and PDO products chosen by the European Community.

We are happy and satisfied to tell you this news.
We will certainly keep you informed in case of new developments.

Fraud in the world of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI.
This is a kind of news that you would never want to hear. As lovers of this extraordinary product, this news is hurting us.

The protagonists of this sad story are several people and companies such as Acecrem, Vandelli, Carandini, Leonardi and Lanzoni that are now under investigation.
They are accused of different crimes: forgery of registers, counterfeiting of typical geographical indications and food names.

Balsamic Vinegar of Modena fraud: the fact

According to the investigations, carried out by the Fraud Repression Inspectorate of Agri-Food Products in collaboration with Ravenna Guardia of Finanza and coordinated by the public prosecutor Claudia Natalini, people involved would have circumvented the rules imposed by the ABM Production Disciplinary. They have sold a product as PGI and not as a condiment (fraudulent use).

PGI

The accusation, which will be confirmed in the courtroom, is to have used concentrated must by passing it off for cooked must and wine vinegar.
The result was a product of dubious quality that does not comply with the provisions of the Regulations. It was mixed in Romagna and offered for sale by Modenese companies such as Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI.

The Disciplinary for the Production of ABM PGI allows the use of raw materials from vines also recognized outside the Modena area but the mixing and ageing must be carried out only and exclusively within the province of Modena.

Various companies involved and investigated in this episode

In this case are involved the producers of cooked must Daniele Lanzoni, Giovanni Lanzoni e Angela Razzi (partners of the Lanzoni Daniele & C. company based in Lugo di Romagna – RA) and the managers of the Modenese companies that produce the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI with which they conducted business relationships.

The Vandelli company from Formigine (MO) and its directors Francesco Leonardi and Clelia Mussini.

Azienda Agricola Leonardi from Magreta (MO) headed by Giovanni Leonardi and the purchasing manager Graziano Borghi.

Acetificio Emilio Carandini from Castelnuovo Rangone (MO) led by Luca and Giovanni Carandini.

Acecrem from Spilamberto (MO) – better known as Acetificio Giuseppe Cremonini.
Alberto Ferrari chairman of the CDA, Simone Cavani laboratory technician and Luigi Roncaglia special attorney appointed to reject non-compliant raw materials.

The hauler Giuliano Ghirotti was also involved, claiming that he had delivered wine vinegar and must cooked in different tanks. He is accused of having tried to evade the investigation.
You can see from the images of the video surveillance cameras of a large Modenese manufacturer that it was a single delivery of the product already mixed.

Balsamic Vinegar of Modena fraud PGI.
We hope that this unpleasant story will be clarified as soon as possible and that it will eventually exonerate any non-responsible people, without confirming events that would penalize the image of our food excellence.

Greeting from Modena.

German Court protects Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. It confirms the full defence of the term Balsamic in Germany against products that evoke or imitate it.
An appeal sentence was issued on May 28 that erases the decision of the Karlsruhe Court. It denied the protection of the Balsamic term in Germany for our black gold.

This provision comes after that the Court of Justice of the European Union has issued a sentence last December. It was erroneously interpreted as contrary to the protection of the term Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.

After the sentence took place, the Consortium for the protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena has supported and confirmed that what was pronounced by the Court of Justice did not in any way reduce the possible cases of evocation. Today has arrived the full confirmation that even the German judges agree on the protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena despite products that evoke it in terminology. They have the same ideas and give the same interpretation as the Italian Consortium.

The German Court protects the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. Mariangela Grosoli, President of the Consortium, explains us – ‘A historic step for the protection of our product at the EU level. The news confirms the correctness and foresight of our position and the initiatives undertaken in the last years. I renew my thanks to the Honorable Paolo De Castro and the Italian institutions that have shown great sensitivity and competence, and also a constant interest in the protection of Italian PDO and PGI products’. –

German court protects the Balsamic

The Director of the Consortium Federico Desimoni reiterates that – ‘This sentence is really important because it clarifies the decision of the Court of Justice. It protects our product and I believe that it will also have positive repercussions on the other ongoing disputes between Italy and Germany’. –

A victory

This sentence is not only a victory for the Consortium but also for all consumers who ask the market for clarity, transparency and fairness. The evocation mechanism is a subtle methodology with which some manufacturers take advantage of the terminology to improperly exploit their products.
