Gocce di nero is the first novel on Balsamic Vinegar written by Ivan Muratori and it is a detective story. The balsamic vinegar is not only the protagonist of books based on recipes, but here it becomes on of the partecipants of the story.
The story takes place over seven days. The setting is the Bassa modenese, namely Casette Panaro. The Bassa is chosen by the protagonist, as he himself explains in the first pages, just to expiate his guilty adultery. To present the story is the main character: Lorenzo Barozzi, nicknamed by friends “Il Barozzi”. A fourty-year-old left by the girl named Elena, with whom she shared a bar, a house and three cats.
After being caught with the lover from the former, he is thrown out of the house and so he decides that the place of redemption should be the damp and misty countryside typical of Bassa. He also opens a new shop: the “Piè Veloce”. A restaurant where typical dishes of the Modena tradition are served. Inevitable, then, are the recipes with the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. The dishes of the menu are typical of the modenese tradition. From the starter, you can find the radicchio salad, the onion omelette and of course a few drops of balsamic vinegar.
Among the first dishes there are pumpkin tortelloni with parmesan flakes and drops of original Balsamic Vinegar. Finally, sweetness can not fail to present some balsamic notes. Here comes the creamy milk ice cream with black cherry blossoms and drops of vinegar. There is also an entire chapter named “The Black Gold”. One night the life of the main character will be twisted by an homicide.
Gocce di nero is the perfect novel that matches the taste of a detective story with the culinary taste of the balsamic vinegar of Modena. I think it is worth reading it, tell us what you think in the comment section!
